As posted on Facebook, we will be having the day off today, Wednesday. I will be there of course, for anyone who wants to work with me one-on-one on next Sunday’s anthem, 10000 Reasons.
On Sunday, we will begin rehearsing at 9:30 with the understanding that some of you will be at the Grow class.
Secondly, I managed to re-master the sound for Ramirez, and I think it is quite impressive!

Once again, thank you to those who came to rehearsal last night. It was wonderful!
Bullet points for our busy week:
Rehearsals/warm-ups for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are at 6:00. Please make a special effort to be in your chair, ready to sing, at 6:00.
Saturday Dress Rehearsal: to be completely transparent, I scheduled the call time at 2:00 PM. However, I will be running strings only for about 30 minutes. My recommendation is that you take advantage of listening to what we will all sound like together, as well as reviewing your part softly as we go along. Please be reminded that this rehearsal is mandatory.
Sunday soundcheck: please be in your seats, ready to sing by 10:00 as we have so very little time to adjust and get ready.
Did I tell you how sensational and inspirational I believe we will be? This Easter promises to be anthological! Let’s make it so. I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

One of our Easter selections will be the marvelous Gloria from the Misa Criolla by Ariel Ramirez. Task number one, for many of us, is the pronunciation of the Spanish text.
I will be adding a learning aid shortly. In the meantime, I am posting the vocal score and the text itself.
Rehearsals for this work will begin tomorrow, March 13, 2019. Please make every effort to attend. If by any reason you must miss rehearsal and you need help with the Spanish text, please come see me during one-on-one “tutoring” hour on Wednesdays at 6:00 PM.
A hard copy will be provided, so it is not necessary for you to print the score.

Believe it or not, Easter is around the corner. We must start looking at music as soon as possible and I wanted to share with you my thoughts on Easter morning:
Allow me to preface by saying that I am convinced that we have the vocal talent to sing the program I have in mind with excellence. The question is not what we can do but how much. So, here it goes.
Based on the theme “A Glorious Easter Morning”, I thought that we could sing three major Glorias composed by Vivaldi, Rutter, and Ramirez. The first one, less than 3 minutes, would be the opening to worship. I envision not a prelude per se, but maybe – I would need to double check with the clergy – an answer to an opening spoken proclamation. The Rutter, which we all know and love, would be the central, Offertory piece. Then, as a closing statement of openness and inclusion, we would sing the Gloria from Ramirez’ Missa Criolla. This piece is done with several Andean-region instruments and South American percussion. What I find very exciting about this work, is that I see it as a segue to the so-called Liberation Theology. For those of us not familiar with this movement, it I can be summarized by saying that it applies religious faith by aiding the poor and oppressed through involvement in political and civic affairs. This theosophy will sound at least partly familiar to us, although its adherents took it to a different level of activism through, arguably, Marxist leanings.
I believe that I can “recruit” my choir at Santa Natividad to come and join us, and bring along all the necessary percussion instruments which I have been incorporating into worship over there. This could truly be a transformative experience for us all.
My question is, basically, if I am being overly ambitious as it will require a major commitment on our part to attend rehearsals and truly push ourselves to the limit. I will continue to offer individual coachings every Wednesday at 6:00, and because of our schedule change on Sundays, a second session will be offered at 9:00 AM on that day.
The possibilities are there. I commit to giving this project all the time needed for success. I also know that your precious time is finite, and I would be totally agreeable to doing, for instance, Vivaldi as an Introit and Ramirez as Offertory only (no Rutter).
Would you please chime in the comments section of this blog post, so that I may receive your feedback or send me your comments via email.

Hello, Songbirds!
I wanted to make sure everyone knew that in lieu of this evening’s rehearsal, we will be meeting at 9:30 AM next Sunday, December 30th. Please be on time.
I am also taking this opportunity to thank each and every one for a magnificent Christmas season. Our concert on the 17th was exceptional, and the solo contributions made by Megan, John, and Neal, were of the highest caliber.
I am sure you’ll agree that Christmas Eve would not have been the same without our men’s quartet beautiful rendering of Mary Did You Know: thank you, Keith, Luis, John, and Neal. Lastly, my thanks to Megan and Ajay for their incredible solos on O Holy Night. As you know, Ajay also did a great job as my substitute at 7:00 PM, and, although I could not be there, I am certain that Patti and Vivan’s solos were very special.
All-in-all, it was the joy of singing and the love for one another that made it all happen.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we travel through some issues regarding personnel…including me, for I will not be here for our 7:00 pm due to a pre-existing commitment at Holy Nativity in Plano.
These are our FINAL plans:
Choir meets at 6:30 SHARP for sound check, in the sanctuary.
Ajay will play/lead musical worship at 7:00 (I will lead 11pm)

Music for Sunday, December 16th, 2018
Hello Everyone!
If we are going to follow the tradition of a musical presentation the 3rd week of Advent, we have to get started…yesterday.
I have decided to present us with a formidable challenge, namely the first chorus of Handel’s Messiah. Below, please find a link to the score, posted on Noteflight. This is going to require a considerable amount of work on your part since rehearsal attendance is not what I had hoped it would be. But…one day at a time: we cannot change overnight, and I do understand. That is why I prepare these materials (right Alyssa?)
As our good habits continue to develop, I remind you, please: always check our blog before rehearsals and before worship. If you still need help: ask! After Christmas, we will only provide printed music if it is in our library, or if you ask for it in advance. Walking into Sunday rehearsal with the traditional “what are we doing today”, won’t be an option, OK? I’m not trying to be an ogre: I value your efforts so very much. The whole congregation does! But just as our “bento box” program asks us to do, choir requires a commitment equal to a pledge. I know that you understand, right?
Questions? Comments? Please share your opinions. Perhaps your ideas are better or more practical than mine? Great! Let me hear from you, please? With a cherry on top?

Hello, songbirds!
What a crazy busy Monday I had. Often, “Hillsong” type songwriters compose very catchy melodies, but when it comes to arranging them or publishing for others to perform…ouch.
It turned out that both the 3 part arrangement and the piano score were plagued with clunkers, so I decided to re-write the whole thing. Hopefully, all errors have been cleared. If you find anything funky, would you let me know?
As I did with Ubi Caritas (I think went rather well, don’t you?), I am publishing a Noteflight score for you to study with.
But, most importantly, I am totally pumped about us creating a moving yet electrifying, gathering worship experience next Sunday. We can do it, songbirds!

Learning tools: as promised, I worked on individual sound files of your parts. Bear in mind that they lack nuances, and tempo is a little faster than performance. That is intentional, to save you time. Simply click on the link of your choice

Dear Songbirds,
Good job! A BIG shout out to Louis (is this spelling correct?) for preparing you so fantastically!
I feel extremely positive about yesterday’s anthem, “I’ll Fly Away.” Ultimately, what matters most, was by all means achieved: love flowed in every direction!
Of course, we will talk this Wednesday, our first rehearsal, about the many things we need to do in order to reach the kind of level we are totally capable of reaching. Some will take time, but others can happen right away – I know it
Once again, please subscribe to our blog. Thank you to the five members who already have! You will soon realize how easy it is to do, and how much we will all benefit from being organized and prepared.
In the meantime, I have a question: have you sung Durufle’s Ubi Caritas? I am planning to rehearse this piece on Wednesday. It is so beautiful! Would you please let me know?

Hello, songbirds.
We had originally planned a Va Pensiero Grand Finale for June 24th. Because of some travel conflicts, I am inclined to end the year on the 17th. The quartet will sing by themselves one more week (the 24th) and then we will have one cantor per week until we resume choral activities on August 12th.
I NEED you to please reply to this blog in the comments section ASAP indicating your availability for June 17th. I NEED this done by next Sunday, please.
Secondly, cantors:
I NEED you to pick your summer weeks (2), by commenting a second time on this page to make it efficient and have a public record. Personally, I do not have a preference whether you want to sing one, two, or even more Sundays, as long as we are covered. Summer Break is Fast Approaching!
June 25th is our last Sunday. We will resume activities on Wednesday, August 9th.
As stated above, Summer Break is Fast Approaching. Which means…we are still giving 110%!
Please check our blog, print or download your music, come prepared…OK? We have done so well minimizing the “what are we singing today?” factor during the last several months. Let’s keep it up! Help and encourage each other during our final push.

Hello!
We had a very productive rehearsal last night, during which we began taking a look at the Gloria from Ariel Ramirez’s Misa Criolla.
In addition, I have made a little scrolling video of the score of parts A and A’ (opening and closing). The middle section (B) will be done by one voice only, and it is not included in this visual masterpiece.
An important reminder:
On Saturday, April 15th at 2:00 PM, we will be having our annual Easter rehearsal. Please make every effort to attend. You are keenly aware of the fact that the Alleluia is not an easy piece, and I know that none of you will be walking into rehearsal, Easter morning, asking the ubiquitous (yet greatly decreasing in frequency) query: Vat are ve doink zis mornink?

Important News Regarding our March 26th Concert
On Saturday, March 25th, we will be having a brief Choir rehearsal at 2:00 PM. Please make EVERY effort to attend, as it will be impossible to sing our concert anthem “cold”.
In the meantime, I wanted to share the following quotations I’ve compiled. Please take a second to ponder over these…they are extraordinary!
